Arc System Works, known for fighting games like Dragon Ball FighterZ, Granblue Fantasy Versus, and Guilty Gear Strive, is leading the rebirth after acquiring the IP in 2015.
The report indicates
That the studio intends to leverage its fighting game expertise for the game's battle system. The updated Double Dragon will be available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Arc System Works has previously released two titles in the Double Dragon series since acquiring the license: Double Dragon IV and Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons, both of which were designed to evoke the series' early games. However, this new game aims to modernize the franchise.
Double Dragon first made its arcade debut in 1987
with a NES version following a year later. The game was subsequently released on various platforms, including Sega Genesis, Game Gear, Game Boy, and Super Nintendo. At its peak, Double Dragon inspired live-action films, animated programs, and action figures, cementing its status as a cultural phenomenon.
