Recently, Netflix has received backlash
For improperly updating it's user interface (UI) since many users complained about it being hard to find content. The updated version of the design, with Netflix's interest in promoting "trending" titles over its existing well-crafted library, has made it hard to find, consequently burying some of its best materials. One of the many names that have been lost on the service is Nimona; a film commonly agreed upon as one of, if not, the best comic book adaptation on the service. Despite being good and having a loyal following, consumers often need to search for it directly to find this great movie.
Nimona, appearing in 2023
Is already a well-liked and discussed work based on the beloved graphic novel by ND Stevenson. The film is full of so many great things, yet is getting hardly any publicity to promote it. It is infuriating to see a final product be underappreciated after the hard work and effort to get it animated. It is disappointing to watch the film stay in Netflix's shuffle pile for its creators and fan base. The film's lack of promotion, and lack of coverage by content prioritization artificial intelligence in Netflix's app is not going to help it find the audience it deserves.
At first look, you might think that Nimona is a charming little fantastic fantasy; however, it is not afraid to highlight deeper and more serious topics that resonate with its viewers. The story itself is cleverly set up in a "medieval futuristic kingdom" that marries aesthetics and social paradigms in a fun way. The kingdom valorizes its knights in an exaggerated way, who appear to be historically renowned for separating its citizens from rather terrifying "monsters beyond the wall." The plot begins to thicken when we meet Ballister Boldheart, voiced by Riz Ahmed, who is on the verge of being crowned as the first commoner ever to be knighted in history. However, instead of being knighted, Ballister goes from an impossible promotion to being thrust into an "innocence or guilt" journey.
What a simple summary doesn't account
For is how incredible and emotional the experience of Nimona is. This movie is an unbelievable success of animation and storytelling. It is deeply emotional, knows how to say something about brokenness, and takes narrative chances that are not often taken in mainstream media. The soundtrack is simply amazing and elevates key scenes of conflict and outstandingly transports important plot points into unforgettable, vivid moments that linger long after watching it. All of these elements come together, and the end result is a deeply memorable experience that is also deeply emotional.
